MVU School Resource Officer Survey WRITTEN COMMENTS Faculty: I think having a resource officer is a deterrent to problems Staff: Poor return on investment Faculty: Share more info with staff. What comes up? What do you do? How is it working? Faculty: Having a trained police officer in the school not only provides a terrific prevention mechanism for unlawful behavior. It also gives the students a role model to talk to and form relationships with. Faculty: Whenever I have asked Greg to visit classes he has always been willing to come in. Kids respond positively to him and he is a valuable part of our school. Faculty: I wish the middle school was more involved with this program. Faculty: It is absolutely crucial to have a visible SRO who reaches out to students, staff and community. I am 100% supportive of having an SRO at MVU. Faculty: I cannot schedule the SRO for instructional purposes in my class in the future if I cannot rely on his carry through. Faculty/Middle School: I have not seen Greg around as often as I have in the past. Faculty: I have not ever had any interaction with the resource officer. I’m not sure to what extent he has decreased violence as I have never seen any data. Staff: SRO needs to be much more involved. Sit on EST, more prevention work. Faculty: We need to see more written information (Stats) on what SRO is responsible for and what has actually been done. Maybe a monthly report. I hear nothing. Staff: I’d like to hear more talks to assembly or classrooms about drug use or harassment. Faculty: It is very important to coordinate with student management. Faculty: I would like to see us revisit goals and objectives of this program. Have we strayed away from these? Do they need to be rewritten? Is everyone who is part of our school community knowledgeable about these goals and objectives? Faculty: I feel the officer should be present at school before the students/faculty arrive and leave after everyone is gone. Staff: I don’t believe the SRO has changed the overall tone on campus (decreased drug use/violence). In addition, I believe that the officer’s services are not necessary year round. Furthermore, his duties should include coverage of extra-curricular activities held after school (sports, musical etc.) This might mean his schedule on certain days would need to be adjusted to accommodate the night duties. Faculty: The resource officer is not visible anywhere but Dunk n Donuts. Staff: I don’t believe a resource officer is needed in our school. If we are going to have him here why not give him time off during the day so he can supervise night activities rather than hire someone else. Faculty: I feel that our resource officer is a waste of time and money!!! Every time I have gone to him with a problem he says “That’s not my job” or that’s out of the scope of why I am here.” Why is he here? He is the only person here with a bullet proof vest that refuses to go anywhere near kids. I say good by to the resource officer and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Staff: He is always late or leaves early. To pay him over the summer to do that is unacceptable. Faculty: I like having the SRO in our school. He’s a positive model of law enforcement and has always been willing to answer questions. He’s also a great resource for classroom talks. Staff: I feel that in general the staff is less informed about the activities of the SRO than they should be. That may be part of the PR issue. It’s kind\d of like teaching; no one really notices what’s going on until we’re gone. Thanks officer Sodaro. Faculty: I wish the SRO could be better utilized for meeting with individual students. Faculty: Lack of visibility, lack of updates on what you do weekly, could do more with Bullying with middle school students. Faculty: Needs to be more involved in proactive initiatives. We should have more and include him in those. Faculty: Thanks. Definitely you mean a lot to this school. Faculty: He is respectful to students and staff. Student: Mr. Sodaro is a great guy, but I think a police officer in school is a little drastic. Student: Whenever there is a fight he is not around. Student: School needs a resource officer. Student: I’m glad he takes time to speak in classes about his knowledge being a deputy and about seatbelt safety. Student: Don’t really care either way. Student: I feel there is no difference. Student: I don’t think schools are appropriate places to have armed police officers. Guns should not be in schools regardless of who owns them. Student: Give him a raise!!! Student: You the Man! Keep this guy!!! Student: Give him a tazer! Student: I don’t care if the school resource officer stays because I never had to talk to him and anyways I am not going to be here next year. Student: I think we should continue to have a school resource officer in the future. Student: He doesn’t ever do anything, and I don’t ever see him here. I don’t think he’s helpful because we have enough teachers walking around and watching us. Student: I certainly like the officer that we have at our school, and it makes me feel safer. I would like to see him here next year. It’s not as important to have an officer here as having one you know and trust. I feel like I can go and talk to him if I need his assistance. He’s great. Student: Keep up the good work!! Student: He is never around when there is a fight. Student: Mr. Sodaro is the best traffic control guide ever. I t helps to have a resource officer that knows/gets along with kids. I also have a Barbie car. Thank you Mr. S Student: He’s good. Student: Thanks!!! Student: I haven’t used him yet, but I think he is needed for kids who have problems or concerns. It’s a comfort to have him here. Student: Mr. Sodaro is Cool! Student: Officer Sodaro is the best! Student: I like what you do for the school and I would really like you to stay. Students: I don’t think the resource officer can decrease any drug use on the school grounds. They will do it no matter what is there. Student: Mr. Sodaro isn’t really involved. We never see him. It doesn’t seem like he does anything. Student: I don’t know you because I am new here. Student: The resource officer is important to our school but there is still a huge drug problem. The resource officer should perform unscheduled searches of the school, lockers, backpacks, handbags. This will catch illegal drug users. This is important. Student: I feel very comfortable with the school officer here. It makes me feel safe because I knew him in the past and I know he will continue to do a great job. Student: There is only ONE resource officer at this school….How many students are in this school? (Think about it!!) Student: I think he does not do his job right at all. His lazy. Busses break down 15 min before 8 and he is just getting here. Student: I think Deputy Sodaro’s presence at school is a good idea and cuts down a bit of the violence and drug use. Student: I feel safe with the school resource officer around but we still have people who use drugs and there are still bomb threats. Student: For taxpayers to approve a grant for the resource officer, praise the idea and fail to revote his position in the budget would be ridiculous. Everything costs something. This is a cost we need to pay. Student: I would like to see him break-dance Student; I never see him do anything. He is always sitting in his car. Student: Nice work! Student: He does a good Job! You are the man. Student: I think it’s a good idea to have a resource officer at school. He should be stricter. Student: Cop or no cop all this will still happen but it is slowed down by having you here. Hope to see you next year. Student: I think we should be working harder on drugs that are going around in school. Student: I like the safety. Student: I never had to deal with him so I don’t know. Student: I really don’t see much of him. Student: I didn’t see our school resource officer often so I don’t really know much about him. He wasn’t around enough to discourage anyone from doing anything. Student: he is nice and he helps us out on our problems. Please keep him here please. Student: I like having a school resource officer. Student: I don’t know where his office is. Student: I think it’s a good thing for him to be here. I believe he does a spectacular job. Student: I don’t think he has made a big difference. The only things I have seen him do are take cigarettes from kids, walk around the school and direct traffic at the end of the day. To me I would not like to see his presence continue because I feel the teachers can bond together and stop this without paying more money. I feel that we should not pay for him to do something that other faculty can do. I would not like him to return. Student: I always know he is working/doing his job. Student: I have never visited our resource officer but I feel safe seeing him in the parking lot and in school throughout the day. Student: He does not make himself available to the middle school. Student: I feel safer at school when I know that an officer is going to be at the school and checking the school. Student: I think the resource officer should handle all problems that go on after school. Kids calling other kids names and people beating up others. Student: I think having Deputy Sodaro at school is a good thing because just in case something did happen it would be nice to have him there. It’s better to be safe then sorry. Student: He does a good job keeping our school safe. Student: He should leave. He hardly does anything. Student: He is not even in school most of the time. And mostly everybody in 9th, 7th and 8th grade is doing drugs. He sits and eats donuts all day. And I don’t even know where his office is. MVU sux. Just face the truth! This school frichen sux. I hate it. Student: Hell no Student: I don’t really know the officer that well. I don’t know where his office is. I don’t know about any changes that he might have made with drug use and violence being here at school. Student: I did not see the resource officer much. Student: I do not know this officer, although I know what he looks like. Student: I really did not need him for anything and I did not know where his office is. Student: Good work Student: I did not really know that the officer even had an office so maybe he could make it clearer. Student: I like the school officer. I feel safe. Student: Dumb Student: I feel safe with an officer at school. Student: I think having an officer on school grounds allows others to feel safe in their school. I think the officers did a good job so far and should continue to come to MVU in future years. Student: I think that this was a good idea to have this survey so you can see different ideas from different people. Student: I really don’t know who the school resource officer. I really don’t think that the presence helped decrease drugs. Student: I have never seen the school resource officer. Student: I don’t know who the resource officer is. Student: The school resource officer does not really do much of anything for me or the rest of the 7th grade. I believe it is a waste of money for him to be here and in our time of need he would not be any help. Student: When cops are at school, people don’t dare to do stuff. Student: The use of drugs has really been decreased a lot. Violence has been decreased quite a bit. Student: Why do they make homework? It is so dumb. Student: I don’t agree that he stops all violence and drugs. Student: Please don’t take our officer away. Student: I think he makes everyone feel safe. Student: I felt safe knowing the SRO was close by in case he was needed. Student: I feel very safe here. Student: The school year went much smoother. Student: I have not seen the officer around at all. I want him to come to every 7th and 8th grade classroom and check for politeness and take care of name calling because I have been putting up with it for 8 months!!!!!!!!!!!! Student: I feel much safer at school with a uniformed police officer. Student: I have not had a need to see him but I think in case I did I think it is a good thing. Student: I never see the resource officer around the school. Only outside at the end of the day. Student: I believe having an officer on campus makes people feel a little safer. Student: Good Job!!!!! Student: He’s cool Student: I like having a police officer on campus. Student: I appreciate the time the Sheriff spends at school. Student: The school resource officer sux Student: The school resource officer sux. You should go to hell!!!!!!!!!
