I. Conclusion A. Lessons Learned / Issues To Address It is hard to believe that it has been four years since the SRO program was started here at MVU. The program has impacted the MVU community positively as the statistics that have been gathered over the past four years will illustrate. Obviously, there is still more to do to make the program even more successful in the future. Propped doors continue to be a chronic problem on campus. Faculty, Staff and students need to be aware of the potential serious consequences that may result when security is breeched due to a door left open. More door alarms and teacher accountability may alleviate this situation. Apparently communication between the SRO and some members of the MVU community is an issue. If folks are interested in what the SRO program is all about, all they need to do is ask as I have an extensive amount of data that they are welcome to look through. The proactive piece of the SRO program is vital to its overall success. Though I did teach many classes this year, it is nowhere near enough. I need to get into more classrooms especially in the middle school to make those important connections with students. I was not invited into any middle school classroom during the 2004-2005 school year. I am not sure why as I am always willing to fit anyone into my schedule. I need to work harder with the administration and faculty to correct this issue. I still believe that MVU should purchase locks for the lockers here at MVU. If a threat occurs that warrants a locker check, it would be easy and quick to use a master key to pop them all open. The keyless entry system works great. I would like to see it school wide. It would make everyone accountable. Security cameras, a finished crisis plan and another exit/entrance are a MUST. These will be addressed later. B. Accomplishments 2004-2005 The formation of the Public School Safety Committee involving all aspects of the community (Fire, Rescue, Law enforcement, Red Cross, Highway Dept. Etc.) has pushed our crisis plan forward at a rapid pace. It is vital that this document be completed in a timely manner. As of this writing, we are on schedule. With the help of Banknorth and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, MVU was able to acquire (free) many used security cameras as well as the recording equipment to go along with them. With these cameras in place, security at MVU will be greatly enhanced. Hopefully these cameras will be installed and running for the new school year. By having the payphone removed from the gym area, we were able to eliminate the 911 hang calls that were be made from that area. The second exit/entrance to the MVU campus is finally in its beginning stages. Paul Gregoire, Director of Buildings and Grounds has initiated the beginning construction of a gated turnaround for busses in the area of Frontage Road and Route 78. When all is said and done a second road will run from the newly constructed bus turnaround to the MVU campus. It will be used for busses as well as an important evacuation route. The SRO survey proved to be very positive. It showed that things are slowly improving at MVU. It’s not perfect but is better. That is all we can ask for. C. The Future I am not sure about the future of this program. The grant funding is over and it will now be up to the school to “Step up To the Plate” and take over the funding at a time when the budget is in trouble. It would be a shame to see four years of progress come to screeching halt. If its time for me to move on, so be it. Only time will tell.
