FRANKLIN COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE PRESS RELEASE TYPE OF INCIDENT: Fatal Car Crash OFFICER: Sweeny DATE OF INCIDENT: 03-18-06 TIME OF INCIDENT: 0040 LOCATION OF INCIDENT: Route 104, Fairfax NAME: SARTWELL, Chad AGE: 20 ADDRESS: Highgate, VT IF ACCIDENT, VEHICLE YEAR & MODEL: 2000 Chevrolet Blazer DAMAGE (LOCATION, YEAR & MODEL): Total SUMMARY OF INCIDENT: Franklin County Sheriff's Office is investigating a crash that occurred in the early morning hours of 03-18-06. 20 year old Chad Sartwell of Highgate was killed when the vehicle he was operating, left Route 104 in Fairfax and rolled over. St. Albans City Police had observed Sartwell traveling on Main Street in St. Albans at a high rate of speed at approximately 0025 hours. A short time later police observed Sartwell’s vehicle on Route 104 by Fairfax Street and Sartwell fled south on Route 104 at a high rate of speed. St. Albans City Police attempted to catch up to Sartwell, but lost sight of him. As police approached the area just north of Oakland Station Road, they observed Sartwell’s vehicle off the west side of the highway on its roof. Sartwell, who was not wearing his seatbelt was thrown from the vehicle and located approximately 60 feet away. Sartwell was transported to NMC where he died from his injuries. Police believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash. The investigation was continuing.
